It's the torque converter seal that is the problem...
I had the torque converter replaced at 41K miles on my 2003 2.7T. It's so costly because they have to take the whole driveline apart. Luckily for me it was covered under the CPO warranty ($50).
I asked the service manager the same question though..why does this part go so early? I've never heard of such a thing. He said that the seal (not the TQ) was defective, but because of the way Audi designs it, you have to replace the whole torque converter for the repair.
After this incident, I realized that when the CPO warranty expires this car is history!

You don't actually need "enough" people for a class action. Generally they are filed with one
plaintiff and usually a phrase such as "and others similarly situated"
The "Class" can be found later through discovery. That is you can subpoena Audi's records of who owns A6s and who has had the t/c replaced and at what mileage.
It doesn't cost much to file.
Tell them that you are a lawyer and that you will go forward for free, then it costs them money, but it only costs you your time.

I just found out mine needs to be replaced
I got the P0741 code and am about to have this done. Sucks big time. I would like to be involved in whatever class action is done. If this many people are having to do it, wouldn't it be audi's fault?

For folks around Chicago area......
We can replace your torque converter for $1200 including rebuilt TC. My friend has a transmission shop in Chicago northwest suburbs. Rebuilt transmission is $3200 including R/R and 12Mo/12K miles warranty.
