Odd steering problem

Default Odd steering problem

Yeah, I know this is the 2nd "odd" problem I have had in the past week. Actually its been doing it for a few weeks, I just haven't had time to do anything other than look for leaks and make sure the hyd fluid was full (which it was).

So when turning the steering wheel, there is initially a significant amount of resistance, then as soon as there is movement, it "breaks free" and turns with the normal ease of the power assist.

Talked it over with my dad, who is a former Audi service trainer, and he suggested its either A. the relay or control unit for the assist, or B. the shuttle valve in the rack.

Personally, I kinda like A, since I have had my fair share of rack replacements and have always hated trying to get those connections back on the rack.

Thoughts?

Oh car is a 2001 A6 2.7t MT

Inmost such cases in the past it warranted the replacement of the rack. You can try removing the assist relay out (605 or 628) and see if there still is any initial resistance as you describe.

hey buddy. It seems my GF has the exact same problem with her car. She has an identical car to yours. The problem is intermittent on her car though. Did you cure yours? Does yours do it constantly? What was the cure? New rack?

I havent tackled it yet. In the middle of pulling the alt out for a new one, and will probably be doing cam seals cause at least one is leaking... grumble...
