Ok, how much oil is normal in this lower pipe?

No idea. But i know some typically gets there (not 2.7 specific). The most likely source - may be the only one - is the turbo itself.... just upstream

so would oil in the lower pipe be pointing towards impending doom?

passenger side is dry as a bone, driver side maybe had 2-3 oz of oil. MAX i would say half a cup but probably closer to a 1/3 guessing is tough

May be the passenger side turbo is not getting any oil. :-)). I would clean it out an check occasionally. Normal to get some oil. I don't think 1/3 cup is excessive.

Might consider 15w50 synthetic oil

Haha I thought ANY oil was excessive. I've never checked them before.

No, some is to be expected. What i don't know is "what is OK vs how much is not ok".

Witness your situation - you have appreciable oil in ONE but NOT in the other.

I would ask "why?" There may be a nice, safe explanation. Or it might mean you have a leak developing in one.

Sorry to be a master of the obvious.

That was my concern that oil poured out of one but was nowhere to be found in the other. Also after 5 k on this oil change I was only a half quart low on oil (which most of it I attribute to my valve covers that are leaking like a sieve ). Could it be the Pcv system? If it were the turbos how could I pinpoint it?

It was very strange indeed.

any other thoughts on this? not having any other issues with turbos, no noise, boost correctly. oil levels are not low other then what is clearly leaking from the valve covers.

could this just be 10 years of build up that i just finally got around to checking? could it be PCV related?

very confused as to why there would be oil in one and not the other? is the driver side more prone to leaks? does the PCV system vent to one side over the other?

bottom line am i being more worried then i should?

If your boost is normal, builds normally, they are quiet, etc - i would nto be too worried.

Even if it DID develop a leak, is that the end of the world? Unless it gets worse and worse, not really. Drain it and check in a month or so so you can get a read on accumulation rate.

A dying turbo should become noisier, and then begin to spool more slowly as the bearing fail.

Anyone disagree?
