Default Oil Filter

Do I need to get my A6 2.8 oil filters from Audi or do the aftermarket folks have them?

You can get them from any number of aftermarket sources.

Default Warning: Make sure it has a backflow valve

Audi's require the oil filter has a backflow valve. Filters made by Mann have them. Frams do not. Sadly I cannot remember the technical reason for this but if you search the Q list archives it is there.

Tech reason is that if the filter fails or gets clogged...it will still flow oil bypassing the filtr

Default Be aware that Audi runs a high-pressure oil pump requiring a filter designed for such.

I'd stick with OEM unless I specifically knew an alternative would work. However, you need not purchase the filters (Mann brand) from an Audi dealer. There are many aftermarket sources.

Default Anti-backflow valves are so that oil does not flow out of the filter after the car is shut off

Bypass valves allow oil to pass around the filter should it become clogged or otherwise unable to handle the oil pressure through the filter element. Fram, and other makes have both a bypass valve and an antibackflow valve. But there is some question as to the quality & performance of the Fram setup.
