Default Never, ever, ever

buy an audi (or most any car other than a beater) unless you see a complete (documented) maintenance history. I had (totaled last week) a 99 A6. At the end of the line (which for me was into the side of a Hyundai), the odometer read 202,043. I have no doubt it would have gone another 100K

My maintenance folder is about 1 1/4" thick. It includes everything I've done to it and the former owner. Yeah, there's been a pretty good amount of shop time but other than some errant CEL lites and nuisance stuff, it's mostly regular maint, including oil changes every 3,000.

Knowledge is power. I'm in the market for another car. I asked the a seller for documentation, including when the T-Belt was changed, he said, "it was changed last year but I don't have the maintenance receipts". Good luck finding some other sucker. Not me!

i agree, BUT , in my case i perform all the matainence on my car. how do i keep recpits for that?

some people dont like that i do my own owrk, even though i was a certified vw technician .

bottom line, condition of the ar, inside and out, and condition of the motor as well as the character of the person all come into account, documents only say so much. case in point, buying a car from a kid that has all the documents and you think ok it was taken care of, only to find out he beat the crap out of the turbos and have htem spiking up to 25 psi and have them fail 3 weeks down the road... but at least you had all the documents for the matianence

grammar ***** see my other post :P

Come on. It wasn't a new Audi to begin with. And it was abused for 128K miles. And you only paid $6K for it. Insane to put $2K into a $6K car in the first place. Insane to keep pouring money into the hole for rods.

Part the damn thing out and get a newer car.

LOL---only 1 1/4" thick? Mine is about 4" on a 2K4.2A6. And that doesn't include the stuff I've done to it (well, it includes the parts receipts!) like that@#!@#$%little plastic $13 tube for the oil cooler to block coolant link that rots out in 8-10 years and SHOULD have been aluminum in the first place. Or preferably titanium or some material that simply cannot corrode in the system.

But I digress.

I wouldn't buy an audi without a minimum of two years warranty on anything going wrong with it. Because stuff happens, and with Audi it's expensive stuff.

Never sell a car to a friend. It can only end in one less friend. I'd rather take a $1000 less and sell it with complete disclosure to a stranger.

40 years ago I sold my first car (a POS 60 valiant with a 170cu in slant six and a three on the floor) to a friend of a friend. I had paid $125 for the car and put maybe 20K miles on it and tires, brakes, some suspension bj work and incredibly sloppy fiberglass cloth body work. Heck, the car worked and didn't burn oil. Changed oil in trans, rear axle, all that stuff. Sold the car for $175 and the girl that got it went to college with it, put 10K miles on it and broke a rear axle. Shoot..you'd think I had schtooped my friend's first love and then trash talked her on the college newspaper.

Moral of the story...don't sell cars to anyone you know. They will never appreciate it when things go wrong.

I do all my own work. I made my own profesional looking worksheets and always put in the parts and labour and atach the receipts for all parts bought .. I have it in a 4" binder and unfortunately it is gettng very full.

Interesting side note . i took my car in a ( 00 A6 )s it had rusted through on the front drivers fender. Initially they weren't going to cover it but the dealership owner got involved and had Audi cover the repair as he felt the car was so well looked after thay had to do there part and the rust through was iunavoidable.. the car has 350,000km on it .
