Audi 80 2.0E 1994 HELP possible cooling problem
Hello dear AudiWorld
a couple of months ago i bought an old Audi 80 2.0E 8CB4 from 1994 which had been sitting idle in a garage for about two years. The car is en very good shape, and only has 157000k on the clock.
I bought the car for my dad, who is to say it midly NOT a do it yourself type- i am though- and therefore would like to fix any problems before sending it off to him :-)
The cooler was plugged up so i changed it along with the waterpump, thermostat (80degrees celcius) and temperature-reader (the feeler in the cooling flange)
When i run the car on the road the temperature dial in the car would read between 92-96 degrees, after going for a while and then stopping, engine started the temeprature will go to about 102 degrees before the radiator fan starts.
Im my opinion that´s a bit high, so i figured, hell... bad thermoswith- went along and bought a new one. The shop where i bought the thermoswitch told me the new one would "enable" at 95degrees but still the proplem is the same.
I can see the thermoswitch has two switchpoints, a 85/95 and 95/102- what does that really mean?
>link to the part here, Danish website, just for info :-)
Køleblæsekontakt 80 1,3-2,8 8/78-1/96 - Køleblæsekontakt - thansen.dk
I have asked around a bit, i know a few mechanics and opinions vary- some say it´s totallt fine with 102 degrees, others say it´s not supposed to go over 90.
So!?
Do you think it´s too hot?
And
Have i really just bought a thermoswitch that just turns on at 102 dergrees?
Info from anyone running a Audi 80/100 themselfs would be greatly appreciated :-)
Thanks guys
Best regards
Felix

Felix,
I can see the thermoswitch has two switchpoints, a 85/95 and 95/102- what does that really mean?
You have a two speed fan thermoswitch..on normal conditions in road traffic..if the coolant in the radiator gets to 95*C the low speed fan comes on till the radiator cools to 85*C and the fan turns off.
If for some reason..like climbing a steep hill in slow traffic on a hot day..the low speed fan was running BUT the coolant in the radiator continues to climb up and gets to 102*C..then the high speed fan will come on and remain running till the radiator cools to 95*C..then the high speed fan stops..but the low speed fan runs till the radiator cools to 85*C
For warmer climates or if the fan thermoswitch in the radiator placement is on the "cool side" rather than the "hot side"of the radiator..like your Audi 80 I think.....then I would suggest using Audi/VW part number 251959481K for your switch. It is a 85/74 low speed and 93/82c high speed.
