Default Question on Gas....again.

I did a search and saw a few posts about this and I saw that someone mentioned reliability. I am in Atlanta and you guys may have heard that the gas situation out here is bad. Most gas stations don't have anything outside of regular (83 octane) so our choices are non existent at the moment...so as a result I had to put regular in the tank. Now I took this a little further and put some octane boost in with this tank, but I wanted to know what kind of damage; if any; could occur using such a low grade of gas. As soon as they get premium back out here I am definitely going back.

Thanks.

Default I hope you meant 87. 87 won't hurt the engine, but take it easy and avoid WOT

You will lose some power because the computer will adjust your timing to safely run on the lower octane gas, but it shouldn't do any damage.

Also, skip the octane boost. Adding a bottle of that will at best improve the rating to 87.1. That stuff is a HUGE waste of $$$.

Default Heh....thanks, and yes 87 octane...

So its a waist of money? Wow, folks out here are buying it like its going out of style...mainly because of the gas shortage here. Like me I think they feel that it will bring the octane up some...but this is good to know. Forgive my ignorance but what is WOT?

Default Wide Open Trottle and a waist is a good thing especially a thin one on a cute girl

But commercially sold octate booster is a complete waste of $. Read the bottle. It says that it will raise the octane a certain number of points. By this they mean a point = 0.1

If you want a real octane boost go to your local Sherwin Williams or other commercial paint supply store and buy a few gallons of touluene paint thinner. This is the active ingredient in octane boosters. The stuff is 114 octane and is perfectly safe to run in your car at mixtures up to 30%.

If you add 2 gal (10% mix) of touluene to 18 gal of 87 the final octane will be

(87*18 + 114*2)/20 = 89.7

Touluene goes for around $7/gal last time I heard.

Default Toulene is a much better octane booster. Usually between $10-12/gallon.

Avoid anything that is specifically marketed as an octane booster.

Default Yup. For those interested, here is an interesting (albeit somewhat

dated) primer on blending Toluene in with your gas.<ul><li><a href="http://www.elektro.com/~audi/audi/toluene.html">Give yourself a boost....</a></li></ul>
