Question regarding A6 4.2 difference in MY
Have there been any changes since it's release? Or more specifically, is the 2000 the same as the 2004 model?
I know the electronics in the 2002 B6 are significantly different vs the 2001 A4/S4 with the motronic and Cambus system. Did the A6 4.2 recieve those same upgrades sometime between 2000 and 2004?
thanks

The S6 is vastly different than the regular 4.2. It's not just the body (Avant only), but
the suspension is much firmer, final drive is shorter, top end of engine, ecu, and exhaust all different. The trans is programmed for faster firmer shifts.
If you get a chance to drive an S6, check it out. If the V8 in the S6 isn't enough, then the RS6 should do the trick ;-)
My work at AMS is done, thanks for asking:-)

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the S6, but availability will be an issue.
I need a family vehicle, but still want something I can track from time to time (Q-club events).
The RS6 is out of the budget, but the S6 isn't ;-)
I just might have to settle for a 2003-2004 A6 4.2....but I am hoping on the S6 =)

As you know, these are heavy cars. The S6 is probably more track ready.
I think Brian (Brian4.2?) probably did the most mods and tracking of a regular 4.2. I think Gerry and avdh have both had their S6 on the track. There are probably others.
Firming up the rear suspension in the 4.2 seems to make the most difference. The S6 is already firmer and carries a bit of extra weight in the rear, where it helps the weight bias;-)
Yes, finding an S6 is tricky. If you can wait, you might find some as the snow recedes this Spring. Just remind the forum to keep and eye out for you, and watch AW and S Car classifieds.

Thanks again!
I am aware the S6 will be more "track ready" and considering this one will remain stock, I am probably better off with the S6....and stay away from the mods.
I love track events, but family keeps my free-time short. Plus, I have found a local cart-racing league that will supplement tracktime. There's nothing like wheel-to-wheel racing, even if it's only a 9hp motor. Being 1/2inch off the ground makes you feel like it's an F1 car =)
I'll see if I can find Brian4.2...I would love to see his perspective.
