Something also often overlooked is the way that the code is entered. Most Japanese vehicles with radio codes have you directly enter the code via the numbered buttons. A 1234 code would have you press the corresponding radio memory buttons..direct entry... press the "1" then the "2", the "3"...you get the idea, very intuitive.
HOWEVER, the Audi way is once the PSCAN RDS buttons have been held to allow the code to be entered, the code entry is not as simple as direct entry. Button #1 is for the first code digit. If this digit is a 4, press button #1 4x. Button #2 is the second digit. If this is a 3, press it 3x.

Each radio has a different four digit code. When the car was delivered, the code was printed on a card that was given to the customer. If you're lucky, the customer wrote the code down in his owner manual, or on the radio itself.
