Default Tie rod end replacement

Hi...

I've tried to replace the tie rod end today but I couldn't get the tie rod end off the tie rod. I've searched the forums and found that lots of people had the same problem - they all ended up getting the TRE replaced by the dealer or an indy.

Does any one have a solution to remove the tie rod end from the tie rod? I've tried soaking the tie rod end threads in penetrating oil, but it still wouldn't budge.

Thanks in advance.

Next step would be to heat it with a torch, or take it to an indy. :/

Default You can't heat it without melting the rack boot.

I've done four; two easy and two very difficult. let the penetrating oil work it's way in and keep cranking on it.

Default I'm so glad I don't live up in the land of ice and snow - and salt.

Makes working on these cars so much easier.

Default True, even the Bentley says "If boot is damaged, replace"..and that's w/out applying heat.

Sound like the way to go is to use a quality penetrating oil (PB Blaster, in my tool chest) and maybe rap on it with a brass hammer to help crack it loose. I need to do mine this week or next & get the alignment done so I'll post photos and whatnot.

Default The reason Im going to the dealer is because of the alignment afterwards.

When I got my coilovers installed last weekend, the tech said my tie end rod is frozen too and heating it would melt it. So im going to have the dealer replace both of them, either today or tomorrow as a matter of fact. The reason for me is because the dealer knows the right way to align our quattro equipped cars.

Default I've got a nice performance tire shop with a well-experienced alignment tech who really knows Audis.

$100. Well worth it. And the last time or two, they knocked $10 off, as I've been a pretty good referral source.

Try PB Blaster (available at Napa or other auto parts stores), much better than WD-40.

Default Just replace the assembly, its easier.....

The inner joints probably won't be much better then the outter anyway.
