GTA - even on the 2.7T an engine pull is NOT required to replace heads.

My mom's 2.7T had an oil issue and the cams ground down and I replaced one of the heads, but wound up pulling both - never pulled the engine. It wasn't easy, and an engine pull would have made the job itself easier, but I could get the heads off in 1-2 days I bet and I'm a slow worker.

A new head I think is about $500, and he should probably do a leakdown test to see what is going on....maybe he is super lucky and only bent a handful of valves on one side or something....in which case a valve job may be cheaper...

Hey dj, have you had a chance to figure anything out yet? Let us know what you come up with.

I could have sworn i was reading in Bentley "with the engine removed..."

Plus several other people talked about removing the engine to replace the head(s).

But i have never done that.

So i stand corrected.

GTA - no big deal, I just wanted to point it out.

You are actually correct, the Bentley DOES read as "Step 1, remove engine" - but it is not necessary. The issue is that you can't get the exhaust manifold off the head while the engine is in the car - but you can get the manifold off the turbo, and it can then be removed with the head and then removed from the head once it is out of the car....

Like I said...no big deal.

Step #2 Repair

Step #3 Replace engine

How hard can it be?

Huskerbob- that is correct. When I did this job, it was all new to me. I was pretty mechanically inclinded but it was my first timing belt job, and if that wasn't enough to have on my plate I found myself replacing the head with no knowledge. I almost threw up when I saw the Bentley, and it really was something like, "Remove engine". Of course, it had a reference on where to find instructions for that....but it scared the **** outta me.

No kidding, sometimes I think it would be a more accurate, and much easier, instruction to say "lift body off vehicle."........

It's missing teeth? Your timing's caput.

Even if it wasn't missing teeth, it can still jump several teeth.

Do the compression test to see how many valves are bent.
