Default Transmission problem?

I test drove a 1999 A6 Avant yesterday and it felt really solid except for the transmission. I put it in the triptonic mode and when I moved it back to the regular "D" position, the transmission stopped shifting, it stayed in one gear. I had to stop the car, put the tranmission into "P" and everything seemed to work fine again. Is this something to worry about as this car is no longer under warranty?

Default Recipe for a long life for your transmission:

Never use tip.

That is not working properly. I would have the seller fix it before you buy it.

Got my interest. Can you elaborate on that?

Default No data to back it up, but tip appears to be pretty rough on the trans.

Yes, it's designed for tip, but it would really rather shift at some other (usually earlier) point when left in regular mode. When you finally (from the transmission's viewpoint) do shift, the shift is pretty stiff. I own two of these slushboxes with over 300k on them total, and they shift like new (knock on wood).

Default I don't see how this can be true.

The tip selects gears manually, but it does not select the gear in any way that is harder or firmer or faster than full automatic. This is the first time I have heard this theory. If you have any other backup, I'd be interested.

I have a CVT with less than 12k on it. I mulled it over in my mind and came to the same conclusion. It operates like a Tiptronic but I don't use the tip shift. Shifting down while descending a long steep hill seems like a place to use it, but, brake pads are cheaper than transmission repairs.

Disagree. No data to support this
