Trunk Does Lock
By mistake the other day I tried to open my trunk while the car was locked....and surprising enough it opened. In some cases - the alarm would go off - but in all cases it would open. My fear ...how long has this been going on? About a month ago I had the left front door painted. During the removal of the door could they have damaged the trunk locking mechanism?
Please help.
My next step would be to go to the dealer but I would rather not pay $250 for them to just investigate.
Any ideas.

Trunk can lock manually
Just as an additional note the trunk will lock - using the key and inserting and manually turning.
Not sure if this helps diagnosing. it does help me ....at least I know I can lock the car.

I noticed I had this same issue recently but it turns out the based on the position of the lock when using the key it actually does lock.
If memory serves turning the key counter clockwise 'locked' the trunk where the button on the remote and the interior worked if the doors were locked but did not allow the trunk to be opened if the car was locked.

It's all about the position of the key in the trunk lock. You can leave it straight (at 6 and 12 o'clock) or turn left and then return to vertical, or right and then vertical. One of the positions will not lock the trunk, and the other one will. Experiment.

Thanks for the 6 / 12 o'clock settings ....I remember that from years ago. However, still has not fixed the problem. Seems like something may be out of alignment in the trunk and the electronics are not able to connect.
Using the key fob - will still not lock the trunk.
Could there be a small alignment issue? Or is there potentially an electronics issue in the trunk?
