Turbos sending me to the Dentists, The first sign of turbo failure?
Turbos sending me to the Dentists, The first sign of turbo failure?
Over the last couple of days I have begun to hear what is think is the dreaded dentists drill sound form by turbos when I step on the accelerator and the engine revs go between 2500 and around 3000 (I dont know if the sound continues above 3000 but I suspect it would).
From what I research I have done its in this rev range that the turbos are working and therefor on boost. Also that the dentist drill sound (a high pitch wine/rattle) is the first sign of the Turbos being on their way out.
Can anyone confirm this and if this is the case how long after the dreaded dentist drill sound appears do the turbos tend to last?
Many Thanks
James

Could be :-( Do you have or have access to a laptop with the Vag-com software. With it you can log a session of driving and see the requested manifold pressure vs. actual manifold pressure and at least see if you are generating or maintaing the requested level of boost.

unfortunately, turbo life is entirely dependent on how they are treated. Mistreat them with hot shutdowns, low flash point oil, and over-boosted use, and they can fail in hundreds of miles. treat them well and they can last indefinitely. Most people are, unfortunately, idiots.
That said, lots of things can cause that noise. Vacuum leaks, boost leaks, heck, radio RFI.
How's it pulling? Any smoke? Any hesitation? have it checked, or do it yourself if you feel able.
