Special thanks to Chris Miller for setting this up. He even had food for us. The techs walked us through an entire .ppt presentation with videos, commercials etc as they would to train the service/sales guys. Very cool!
Here are some of the big things that I took away from the briefing/presentation:
1) The 3.2 FSI engine is extremely fuel efficient and can average 24-27mpg (fyi - the 4.2 doesn't offer the FSI technology yet).
2) The MMI/Nav option is very intuitive. Some of the screens remind me of my Nav+...but the MMI is a much nicer graphical interface. Also, the map mode shows you street names actually on the map ...which my Nav+ doesn't.
The MMI unit itself is very very cool.
3) The radio tuner "module", bose amp, gps drive unit are all located in the drivers' rear area. It resembles a small stereo "rack" that you'd have in your house.
Basically, this isn't really the kind of car that you want to add an aftermarket stereo to....believe me!!
4) The adaptive headlights are very....very cool. They gave us a brief demo how they moved with the steering wheel. It reminded me of that Tucker movie with Jeff Bridges.
5) They added a cig lighter adaptor underneath the armrest....sounds like someone at AoA saw my tech article. Ha!! The location is perfect...and it even has a little spring-loaded flap to cover it.
6) the design is very subtle....and understated. It just grows on me...each time I see one.
7) the front cup holders are big enough to hold a bottle of snapple or a mug of coffee. Although the rear cupholders now come out of the rear armrest....which I didn't like. I prefer them as they are in the C5.
8) Trunk space was very good...even with a full-sized spare and BIG battery below. Just enough room for three sets of golf clubs.
9) The oil filter is in the form of a cartridge and is accessible from the top of the engine bay. Maybe an oil change can take less than 15 minutes now??
When the time comes...I would definitely buy the 3.2 version of the Avant in the 2006/2007 timeframe...as Audi tends to make some sharp looking "grocery getters".
Bottom-line: This new A6 is a "quantum leap" over the C5. Because all of the electronics are part of the "computer network"...it will make it extremely hard for folks to "tinker/modify/vag" this car to our liking...which isn't such a bad thing.

original impression of driving the 4.2 version

but it is already a generation newer. The basic system is up and running, but they will be adding features and honing the bare bones right up until the cars hit full production. From there on, it will be minor changes unless something big warrants it. Part of the hold-up is the integration with the optional air suspension. That alone should tell us that this MMI is somewhat different.
Fully modular upgradability probably won't happen until generation 4 (the D3 was1, and the C6 is 2).

April,
When does you source believe optional air suspension
for the A6 C6 will be "orderable" (or "deliverable)?
