VW 502.00
What year is it? You need to use VW-approved oil.

http://www.vw.com/SP/pdf/oilchart.pdf</a

I believe the manual says 5w-40 synthetic, but I used 5w 30 Redline in mine which is a better oil
than Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec... Its really different for each brand.. If you can afford to pay a few dollars more, the Redline or Amsoil synthetics are the top choices.

"Better" is a slippery word (no pun intended) when applied to oils.
There are a variety of parameters (sheer, flash point, viscosity, detergent, additives) that can vary. I don't know nearly enough to know what matters and how much -- particularly which parameters make an oil qualify under VW 502.00.
It worries me that Mobil 1 5W30 (a full-synth) does NOT qualify under 502.00, and I have decided not to use it for that reason (whatever reason that is!).
I'd love to know if oil makers CHOOSE not to qualify under a particular standard. The standard is published, and it is somewhat of an "honor system" without third party confirmation. Of course if Mobil says it's 502, you can probably rely on it; but a small oil mixer (redline, amsoil) could take a chance.

My dealer used dino 5W30 5k miles ago. Don't they have to use Audi approved oil?
They didn't even ask me if I wanted synthetic. I normally bring my own M1 0W40, but forgot last time. I figured it's OK, since I change it every 5k anyways. Going in again next week.
Wondering what it does to my CPO warranty, in case anything comes up.

Amsoil 0W-30 meets VW502.00
so does Amsoil 5W-30,
5W-40 (European Car Formula),
10W-30.
Interestingly, I've been running Amsoil 15W-40 marine/diesel amsoil synthetic in my 00 4.2A6 for over 75K miles (car new in Jan 00). The car hasn't used nada oil in 8500mile oil changes, 7 or 8 of them so far...I supply the oil to hte dealer!...and it comes out virtually the same color as it was when it was put in the engine.
The car has overheated mildly once....wife upped the temp gauge but not the oil temp gauge...bad thermostat. New thermostat and car runs same as before, no head gasket issues so far (about 10K miles ago). Boiling water test wouldn't budge the old thermostat. Why can't someone design a 'stat that fails OPEN???

A few months ago we had a detailed saga on a dealer that used garbage oil.
Apparently, the dealers do not feel obligated to follow Audi's guidelines, and they will put in oil that is the WRONG weight, and insufficient rating.
Given that Audi offers free maintenance, I wonder if anyone has thought to press this point when bringing a car in.

15W40?!? Do you cut it into cubes to get it into the oil filler neck?
I just put that goo into my boat engines a couple of weeks ago. I realize it's not that thick, and it's incredibly high quality stuff (if you believe the literature), but is 15W40 within the recommended range?
