yea, keep getting q's from ebay people. im guessing it wont fit a 4.2 either, correct?

It will fit. All 4.2's have the same size grille (even pre-facelift years)

Only if it is from a 4.2, IIRC. Facelifted cars have different grille than 4.2.

The back of the grille may be a little different

the 4.2 hood has no bar across the bottom edge, and the grille acts as the support bar. Not the same on the facelifted 2.7T and 3.0.

You can see the difference in 5speed6's writeup on the RS6 grille install for his facelifted 2.7T. He's got a good shot of the differences in the hood, which is why the S6 and RS6 grilles are not plug-n-play on the 2.7T and 3.0 models.
