Default Are you supposed to hear the turbos working when driving at low RPM's?

Hello,
I have a question.

When I start driving my car with cold engine (the first minutes), I hear my turbos working. The noise is rather quiet but in can be heard when all the electrics are off (radio, heater and etc.).

Is that normal? Or are those the very early signs of turbos going bad?

Default Turbo Spool-up is normal right? The loud sound is "the" trouble

right?

Default Yup. Loud screeching/whistling is when you should be worried.

As well as clouds of smoke coming out of your exhaust :P

When turbos go bad, the sound is impossible to ignore. Your noise is normal.

Default IMO i think this forum scares people WAY more than necessary

short answer, no. what you are hearing is the turbos building boost pressure. this is normal, and this is good. i think K03's deserve a little more respect that they get here on the forums, in general they are pretty resilient little turbos that can go 100,000 to 150,000+ miles with no issues. the problem is that when someones turbos do **** the bed, they come to AudiWorld for help and every one freaks out thinking theirs are next to crap out...

if you have to turn the radio and heater off just to hear the "noise" they are not blown.

heres a few links of truely blown turbos
a) notice the white smoke
b) notice the "dentist drill" sound, the clips barely do it justice, the drill sound is LOUD!

Default The turbos themselves are not the issue. The issue lies with morons that don't know

how to take care of them.

Default Couldn't agree more with that statement. Many turbo issues have been self-inflicted due to

stupidity and/or abuse. =)
