Default 12-13mpg in the 4.2?

I average usually less than 13mpg driving around town in my 2005 4.2 with about 70k miles on it. Is this normal? Seems extremely poor. Could there be any engine issues that are contributing to this (fuel injectors, carbon deposits etc)?

you really shouldn't have issues with carbon, since your engine is pre-FSI. However, when was the last time you changed the plugs, fuel filter. Perhaps your O2 sensor needs to be changed or MAF cleaning may be required.

Unless, you have a real heavy foot and a lot of weight in the trunk/boot, you should be doing better than 13mpg.
