Common problem on VAG cars up to I believe 2003? That's when VAG reengineered the microswitches in the latch. Real PITA to change as you have to take apart the whole door interior to get to it.
Edit. The problem I described was on the B5 Passat and B5 A4. Those latches were reengineered. Seems like our cars have the same problem.

It helped that I had the old faulty lock to work on. You can buy used locks on ebay, or from a breakers. They might work for years or show this fault eventually, but for 50 quid it's worth a chance, and you have to old lock to play with. Front and back passenger locks are almost identical, just the child proof cam in the back one, but they can be interchanged in a fix.
Then I could repair my lock for a spare.

Front driver side door is having lock issue two weeks ago. It is going to be a weekend project. Do you roll up (or roll down) the window before removing the door panel for easy access to the lock? Thanks.

Roll up the windows, but access is not that easy as such. You need to unclip the outer door handle rod and as it's driver side, the rod from the key cylinder. Two star bolts from the inner edge, uncouple the power cable from the base of the lock, then drop and turn the lock to let the bowden cable inside. Remove this cable when you have a clear view of it, this will make it possible to remove the lock by turning it upside down the rotating it around the window carrier frame. It can be done, saves having to unbolt and lift out the entire window and carrier frame. I've not done a driver's side, I believe the lock cylinder rod requires special attention to remove, a small sliding clip. It's mentioned on other posts.

Thanks deezell. This is similar to my problem. It will unlock; but it won't lock. If I try press unlock and then lock with the remote, it will work 8 out of 10 times. But I can lock and unlock using the key. Look like the problem with the main motor does not have enough torque to lock the door.

My passenger door lock has put itself right. What caused mine to go wrong was, the wife tried to open the door at the same time as I unlocked it with the key fob, I think that this threw the lock timing out.
After repeated locking and unlocking it has sorted it self out.
It's been OK for months now.
