Brake Light Warning

Brake Light Warning
Hi Audi Fams,
I got a pesky warning light that said R Brake Light wasn't lighting and its true. I took apart the tail light housing and tried a new bulb and it still doesn't work. I inspected the connecting wires and found that where the clip is, there appears to be either electrical 'burn marks' or rust. I cleaned with compressed air, then rubbing alc / que tip, then electrical grease, still won't light.
I've put pictures here to see if anyone else has a suggestion.

That one male contact in the taillight appears to be burned. You should try running a continuity test of the taillight, and if possible, the wiring leading the the female connector.

Thank you for the response. That's a smart idea that I had neglected to try. Interestingly, when I got into the car this AM, it seems the warning light is no longer showing. I test drove and it seems to be working ok for now. Given this, is it safe to assume the connection is OK? The only thing I did was as I sealed up the components, I scooped out some of the 'grease' (the clear stuff that looks like petroleum jelly) from the receptor portion which wasn' t being used, on the connector and put it into the specific slot for this light.
Does anyone know what the jelly is and could that be a good solution?
