As for the plate, I am in the military and they started to issue small, US size, plates on German US posts.
Just wondering does everyone in the military take their cars with them? Not to be rude; just wondering because i have never heard of military taking their personal cars and I would think many service men and women would like to take their cars with them. haha.

Also one more question. Is it easy and how much does it cost to ship your car? I might be going abroad to London for a semester and it would be awesome to have my own car their. As my parents are looking into alternatives for me and it will be renting a little econo box. Also I am US Citzen non military guess i will be entering the UK on a student visa.

Thanks much

Dude, read first post by Nedrager. He took his car with him and almost ALL military members take their cars with them.
Shipping is free for first car and around $900 for second but for military, I'm not sure for non-military. U assume it will be difficult and might require dual spec car.

We fall under a status of forces agreement between the US and host nation government that allows us to import our cars without customs duties or fees. They also typically do not require our cars to pass the same inspection criteria. Civilians do not fall under that agreement. If you import a car to England or anther country you will be required to pay the tax and import duties plus you'll have to convert the car to meet the local inspection requirements. Bottom line, rent or possibly buy a car locally or join the military and hope you get stationed overseas.

Also, there is a way to make the NAV system region free correct with the VAG? If thats the case, then you should be able to load the US maps again. The car is for sale, I am looking at it this week, i will put in the US maps and see if it works still and let you all know.
I converted my US Spec A6 to the German specs (I am non-military so I had to go through the TUEV to get the car imported) and flashed it with the EU MMI software so the EU maps work correctly.

I am considering taking the car back to the US next year. Were you able to confirm if the US maps load with the EU MMI software?

Thanks!

Ive flashed from US to Euro and back to US that information is incorrect. I am also in germany with Euro Nav now

First, No your euro Nav disc will not work with US software.

Second, Not sure but think... No you won't get 3D no matter the version.

Third, I have flashed to 5170 and don't have 3D and have a Euro 2010 DVD.

What you need to know...

First, It's possible to flash your car to the euro software, it's easy, it takes about half an hour.

Second, The dealer doesn't know how to do it and neither does the factory.

Third, Once you flash you can't flash back to US software, you have to replace the MMI.

Forth, search my user name here and at Audizine for instructions on how to do it.

Fifth, PM me if you have any questions...

Do you know where I can buy the US 4160 firmware CDROMs so I can flash my MMI back to US spec? The European disks are sold on a variety of websites but I don't see anybody selling the US 4160 firmware.

Thanks!

How do you switch your nav from us spec US nav to EU nav? I'm purchasing a 2011 Q5 this week and would love to be able to use the navigation. And just for future reference, can and how do you switch it back to US nav when/if we return to the states?? Thanks for any info!

For the US to EU conversion on MMI 2G, it is a matter of putting in the EU firmware CD (buy on ebay in Germany), select to override region code in the hidden green menu, and use the update firmware (via setup+return menu). Takes a while so leave the engine running while doing this. There's more detailed steps in this forum.

I ended up selling my A6 in Europe so I did not try the conversion back. An army friend of mine had trouble getting this done at an Audi place in the US, but the EU firmware can work with the US nav disk so it is not a big problem.

MMI 3G appears to be a different ballgame.
