UK: Oil pressure warning light, diesel
Our A6 2008 2litre diesel oil pressure warning light has come on and went into limp mode. Haven’t started it since. We have been quoted £850 for a balance pack repair which needs to be done before they can tell if the turbo has been starved of oil which is then another £850. The car isn’t worth that much. 160000 miles on the clock. What are people’s thoughts about offering the car parts out to people? The body wheels seats and much more are in very good condition. Is there a market for this sort of thing. Ideas and suggestions are. Dry welcome. Thank you

I’d personally fix it! Id LOVE to have a diesel A6!
Just because the car isn’t worth much, it’s still going to be cheaper to fix it than buy a whole new car. Couple thousand at most and you have a great car again.
Also, have you checked the actual oil level? Your oil could be fine and it’s just a faulty sensor. Does your car leak oil everyday ?

hi it doesn’t leak oil. There is oil in the car. But its the oil pressure warning not the oil level. You are right it will be cheaper to fix than buy a new one but two car mechanics have advised against doing that. So I don’t really know what to do

I would locate the pressure sensor and remove it and screw in a pressure gauge in its place. If the gauge reads the correct pressure then you need a new sensor, if the gauge reads low then it is time to be concerned. If you shut it off immediately and the light was not accompanied by any sort of noise then chances are excellent that the engine is just fine, diesels are hard to kill.

Limp mode exists to, hopefully, save the engine in times of distress. The ECU got a signal from the oil pressure switch that suggested that the pressure was low, the ECU responds by limiting such things as RPM and/or speed and all kinds of other things that know nothing about. So, if the oil pressure switch was lying (hopefully) then the engine is fine at least in regards to what would happen with a sudden loss of oil pressure.
