One last question regarding the A7 TPMS. If you replace your summer tires with a winter package, does the Indirect TPMS have to be recalibrated and if so, can it be done by the owner (MMI menu)?

The A7 uses Audi’s indirect tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). The system runs off the ABS/wheel-speed sensors which “count” the number of revolutions of each tire and compare the tire tread circumference and vibration characteristics of the individual tires.
If say the right-front tire is low, due to decreased circumference it will spin faster than the left-front tire. The ABS system will recognize this change and alert the driver.
For the system to function correctly, the tires have to be inflated to the correct pressure and the TPMS reset in the MMI. The system will from there on compare the actual measured value to what it was set to. When the wheels are rotated or replaced, the TPMS needs to be reset.
Audi’s indirect system will keep working just the same, even if you switch to aftermarket wheels or tires.

My A8 has indirect as well and in 8000 miles it's had three false alarms. The light and audio warning are triggered yet the tire pressures are fine. The '06 A6 I had with the wheel sensors never did this. Dealership says this isn't entirely unusual with the newer ABS based system. I suppose it's better to err on the side of caution. Whether the A7 is prone to this,I'm unsure. I'll reset the MMI and if I get a second warning within a short time it's safe to assume a tire is losing pressure.

False alarms may be triggered by driving on winding roads, such as serpentine roads going up or down on mountains. In the sharp curves the outside wheel turns faster than the inside one and the TPMS system in extreme cases may pick that up and report it as an underinflated tire.
