'02 S8 Transmission goes into limp mode and slipping..(Long)....
I have 2002 Audi S8 with 61K miles. About two weeks ago the transmission felt like it was slipping. The engine would rev up and then with a "thud" engage into the gear. Seem to me it would do this between second and third gears. Switching into tiptronic mode makes trany go into limp mode. From the posts I found on AW I decided to change the ATF and filter. Did that but with out any improvement in symptoms.
VagCom 1st time showed this:
17116 - Gear 2: Incorrect Ratio
P0732 - 35-00 - -
17114 - Gear Ratio Monitoring: Incorrect Gear Ratio
P0730 - 35-00 - -
Then, after cleared codes, showed this:
17117 - Gear 3: Incorrect Ratio
P0733 - 35-00 - -
Yesterday, I decided to change the ATF again and also clean the solenoids. The solenoid screens looked fine without any debris or sludge. Again, job done without improvement. On VagCom same codes.
One thing I notice, before and now, is when performing an Output Test for the Transmission, the test would go through solenoid checks with audible clicking. Then, when checking Pressure control valves from 2 through 5, I do not here any clicking. Also, when reaching Transmission Solenoid Power Relay the test goes into "Error".
I see a few posts about Valve Bodies rebuild. What are the symptoms of bad VB?
Any suggestions/VagCom checks that I can do to help in diagnosing where the problem is?
Please help!!!

2000 A8 with simlar issue
I am having the same or similar issue with my 2000 A8 with 69,000 miles. My issue was when starting from a stop it would rev up and thud and when it would down shift from 2nd to 1st. Everything ran just fine once I got into and past 2nd gear.
I took it to a local transmission guy that (supposedly) is very experienced in Audi transmissions. He told me that I needed my transmission rebuilt so I had him rebuild it and he said it still wasn't right. Then he thought I needed a new (used) TCM which he installed, but that didn't fix the problem. Now he thinks the wire loom in the valve body is bad so he has ordered one from the dealer which will not be in for 3 more days (he has had the car for 9 days now). He claims to have replaced some other electronics on the transmission (I'm not sure what other electronics he is speaking of though).
I would be very interested in any advice on this matter.
