04 A8 vs 97-03 A8
Warning: subjective post follows
Although I am certain the new A8L is more sophisticated and improved over prior models, I don't believe its looks are quite as classic as the 03. I'm probably alone in this, but I actually find the older body style to be more attractive.
Perhaps it'll grow on me: I felt the same way about the 98 A6 when it came out, but it's looks are starting to become more appealing now.
The exception to this is the A4 which seems to grow more beautiful with every new model (the 96 A4, and the 02 A4 were both clearly more elegant than their respective predecessors).
I am absolutely in love with my 01 A8L (other than a few issues I have yet to resolve ).

You're not alone. I agree that the '97-'03 A8 is better looking than that '04 A8
Of course I'd happily drive a new '04 A8, but I do think the outgoing model is more classic in appearance.
I just looked at a new '04 A8L today, and I didn't like the appearance of the interior as much as the outgoing model. Is it me, or does the new model have more chrome/silver/aluminum circling various items inside, such as the gauges? I really hate that. I'd have to black it all out (except around the auto trans shift).

Nope, not alone; ...
but I expect it's only a matter of time before the new styling starts growing on me. The other thing I'm wondering about is the proportions of the "short" wheelbase A8 or the next S8. The A8L looks about perfect, an A8 or S8 may look too tall.

Agree Totally. I saw a 2004 from the lot yesterday
driving by Valley Motors. We were in a really big hurry or would have stopped.
The car was silver, and looked really nice. I am going to go over there tomorrow and see if they'll let me take photos of my S8 next to it....
I love the "old" design!

I agree, the '98-'03 A8/S8 looks more "muscular" than the '04 A8L, which looks more elegant.
The reason I chose the '04 A8L over the '03 S8 is simply because if you're going to spend over $100,000 on a brand new car you better get the best and most advanced vehicle possible.

Another comment: horsepower and torque
Really wish that the standard HP in the new A8L was a bit higher. Was reading the journal and there is a full page ad for the 2004 Jaguar XJ. Supercharged 4.2l engine at 390hp, 399ftlb of torque.
Now, I know that the A8L has a lot of other things going for it (especially that it is NOT a Ford), but they sure did stake out some serious performance ground here.
C'mon S or RS.....!
