1998 A8... oil in coolant expansion tank?!?!?
Car came to a studdering stop today... I was near empty so I though that could be the culprit, but when I popped the hood I saw what seem to be a half an inch of oil floating on top of the coolant in the expansion tank. I tried searching and found something about a oil cooler seal? My inclination is that its a head gasket, but the oil is not truly mixing with the coolant... no milky substance Im used to seeing when oil mixes with coolant. Any ideas? thanks in advance...

Agreed
It could be the pipes connecting, but it sounds like it could be the plates in the cooler itself.<ul><li><a href="http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/enginemechanical/oilcoolerremovalreinstall.html">I would consider replacing the whole cooler</a></li></ul>

Oil cooler eliminator ?
Has anyone come across references to the oil cooler adaptor (Sonnax part number 119814-01k)
The kit allows removal of the water/oil cooler and provides taps for hose connections to a typical air/oil cooler unit.
Just a thought, I am not sure if this part number is directly applicable to the 4.2 L V8
I will check on that soon.
