A8 trip computer seems erratic
My 95 's trip computer gives erratic readings on instant fuel consumption starting up at 51 litres per 100km's and then counts back to o per 100 kms
Also the average fuel consumption does not work stayin at zero.
Time driving and average speed seem ok
Could it be a loose wire??

Yes to the possibility of a loose wire -- if I recall correctly, through 1999 there's a consumption signal on its own wire between the engine control module and instrument cluster. You might start by inspecting the plug at the engine control module, and if nothing looks bad there, unplugging and replugging the connections to the instrument cluster. It's not likely to be the plug at the ECM, but it's much simpler to reach than the plugs on the instrument cluster.
But it's odd that the average stays at zero even when the instantaneous briefly goes as high as 51 l/100 km. Also odd that the instantaneous consumption, which is normally capable of jumping rapidly between readings, should count back as in 51, 50, 49. Not sure what mechanism could explain that.

Re: A8 trip computer seems erratic
Thanks I have tried the cluster end with no success and am not sure where the ECM is placed.
Can you help with a brief description of its location.

On a US model, 1997 or newer (the first year they were imported), it is under a cover just ahead of the windshield on the passenger side. The cover is held down by several screws and has a rubber gasket, all of which must be reinstalled carefully to keep the electronics dry.
If you are going to regularly troubleshoot and repair this kind of thing, a service manual will be most helpful.
Good luck!
