Audi sound system
I'm new to this forum. Could anyone tell me about the audi sound system in the a8. Is it a bose, how many speakers, and can it be upgraded. I was very unimpressed with the "premium" system in the s4 and I believe that's a bose. Thanks

Everybody talks bad about these Bose systems
I think this one and the one in my 91 200q (four speakers) are some of the best sounding systems! And I crank the volume sometimes. No, it doesn't have subwoofers that shake the windows of houses as you drive by, but I'm always amazed, especially when listening to live CD's, of how loud it gets and how great it sounds.
However, I've never had a REALLY serious sound system in my car to date. But for me, it works great!
BTW, it has two speakers in each door, two tweeters at the top and two down under, and two in the rear deck.

I've heard the harmen karden system in a bmw745i and in an m5 and they're far superior. I was just hopeing that the new a8 might have an equivalent system available.

The stock stereo in the S4 is not Bose ...
So unless it had the Bose option, you were listening to the stock Symphony stereo that came with all A4s.
Bose systems in some other car brands sound quite good. The 200 W Bose system in our '98 Maxima sounds great for a factory system. I've heard that it's not quite as good in the A4 and S4.

The A8's system is pretty good IMO
At least better than the MB S500 (also a Bose system integrated into the COMAND). The speakers in the S500 seems to have a lot of background noises and feedbacks and lacks the "grunt" the system A8 has. What I do like in the Mercedes system is the driver optimization feature which improves things a bit for the driver only.
The best audio system supposedly is the optional Mark Levinson system in the new LS430.

10 speaker + woofer. 220w total output IIRC.
Main driver (looks back ported?) in the bottom of each door with a tweeter near the top, 2 large main drivers on the rear parcel shelf and a subwoofer strapped under there too.
Quality of the setup is subjective. Personally, despite liking it, I preferred the Bose in my A6 Avant because that had a really big sub in the trunk and it suited the kind of music I listen to.

If you are an avid music person and have a quality system at home, you might be disappointed with Bose.
