I wanted to post this to hopefully spark some conversation. I know that a few of us have discussed this off line via email. There are a few, seem to be mostly 2000 A8s, that exhibit this creaking. Only when warmed up, and very easy to reproduce. It definately is associated with the cam tensioner. You can make the noise go away when you unplug them.

I had never seen this cut away thought it might shed some light on this issue. Does not seem to affect performance.<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/s4b6/msgs/452261.phtml">Non-Serviceable.... Hmmm</a></li></ul>

I agree 100% it's something to do with the cam tensioner and is likely oil related - BUT, I don't think it's an oil starvation/pressure issue related to poor maintenance.

I guess my best proof is that I changed the driver side cam tensioner on my old car with a brand new one and still made the noise....

Would love to find a fix for curiosity sake if nothing else.

Stealer quoted me $2650 to change them out and tried to convince me that the cam chains could come off if this was not fixed. This was about 3 years and 80k miles ago.

I occasionally get a creaking noise that sounds like it's coming from the dash, sounds like something in the HVAC system like a vent opening or something. It seems to happen when the car is cold and is just getting warmed up.

Could I be hearing what you are describing?
