Default Creaking when turning wheel...???

2003 Audi A8L (D2) ... Starting to experience a pretty solid creaking noise when turning steering wheel while driving as well as when the front end is up in the air and I turn the wheel with no weight on it. Sounds like middle of the car which scares the hell out of me if it's the rack. I was hoping it was the control arms being everything is original at 140,000. No oil leaking though out of the boot... Would inter-tie rods under the boot make this much racket? Any suggestions but a little concerned.... Not interested in an 8 hour job right now... And... But if it is, can someone point me to a really good place to buy a re-built rack???? I use raxles.com for CV's and would love to find a good place like that if possible for this... Or of course I could order a new one from Audi for about 34,000... Thank you in advance if anyone reads this and comments!!!

It could be the front sway bar droplinks, they groan when you turn the steering wheel when the rubber inserts start to come unbonded from the aluminum (C shaped) dogbone.
