Default Also, if there is a break in the head gasket between the combustion chamber and the coolant......

you will get combustion gasses into the coolant (after all, the combustion chamber is at a much higher pressure than the coolant during normal operation) and it will force the coolant out of the overflow! Happened to my wifes' P.O.S. Toyota several years ago.

Default That can be bad.

After you turn off the engine, the coolant has more pressure and it can fill up the combustion chamber. At the next start up it can bend the piston rod. It happened before.

Default Look at the underside of the oil fill cap. Coolant mixed with oil would

form a goopy gunk. (descriptive huh?)
Inwhich case twould be a head gasket
Dont ask how I know this:/

Default No goop under the oil cap or "milky" oil on the dipstick

Actually, the oil in both places looks pretty clean. The earliest I can get it in to the shop is Monday, so I'm going to drive the wifes car as much as possible. Right now I think we can eliminate the head gasket (fingers crossed) but seems more and more like its going into the tranny.

The ATF cooler... that makes sense. Didn't even think of that when I read your post.

Default Re: I thought you said you had spots in your garage?

Yes, there were in the past a few drops around the front driver side wheel area that I could not locate but they seem to have stopped, and with putting 1.5 gallons in this week, i'm sure there would be more than drops anyway. The bleed plugs were replaced in the fall. I'm watching the area around the tank because there is some sign of run off, but not sure if its just spillage from refilling. I'll try to post a pic once i've run it again.

Default You need to check the tranny.

If you need a new radiator it is much cheaper than rebuild the tranny.

Default Depends on where the bad part of the gasket is, wouldn't it?

I don't see why a bad head gasket has to let coolant into the oil.

If the coolant's getting into the combustion chamber, you may get sweet smelling exhaust. steam from the exhaust when you wouldn't expect it (I've followed an old Toyota up a hill which was doing both of these), and positive readings from an emissions tester held over the open coolant reservoir with the engine running.

Default Anything is possible.

The head gasket has holes for the coolant and the oil too.
