Ever Replace a Transmission Before?
TozoA8 and myself will be trying it on Thursday/Friday....his car at my garage on jack stands.
He made an engine support tool....
I'm skeptical....I'm thinking this is going to be one *itch of a job and probably take at least three days.
He's the lead, I'm the helper....wish us luck, I think we'll need it!

Best of luck to both of you..
I have confidence that the two of you can do this. If you cant then you expect me to have faith in the Audi mechanics to do this?
Hopefully you will have a better idea of what could be wrong when you pull it all out and get a better look at it.

It ain't easy... Good luck!
I tried doing it in the '58 'vette, back when I had a 327 in it with a T-10 4-speed. You figure it would be easy, engine in the car and us under it with transmission. It wasn't easy.
It may be easiest to drop the subframe as a whole and lift up the car.
I assume Tozo's fubar transmission is coming out and some sweet build-up from Level 10 is going in?

Re: Ever Replace a Transmission Before?
Never an A8 but many others. The crosswise FWD ones are a pain, often little room to work. At least an A8 is North-South.
Some long extensions 18", 2' and universals, or better yet, flex sockets often come in handy for getting the bell housing bolts out.
If alignment dowels or bushings are not obvious cutting the heads off a couple of scrap bolts (slot with hacksaw for screwdriver) makes you some guide pins. I have a variety of 8mm and 10mm bolts I made up for this purpose for various cars. At least with an automatic you don't have to worry about bending the clutchplate hub. Put an index mark on the TC and flex plate/flywheel.
I have never used a tranny jack, just a floor jack (good one) with a larger pad bolted on.
Chainsaw wedges or cold chisels work to control tilt
DO NOT let the TC topple out of the bellhousing as you are horsing the tranny out. Replace the front tranny and TC seals while you are in there, and take a close look at the rear main.
Might be worth grinding a bevel on the first few bellhousing bolts back in, helps to start them.
Really good lighting helps. Beer helps. Good luck.

LOTS of beer....... (when the day is done)
I've removed several transmissions over the years, but not any of the Quattro trannies. It can be a real pain to get everything detached, and getting the tranny to line up correctly when installing can be a challenge. My only wow (words of wisdom) is to take your time and don't force anything. And take a break and drink a beer when you are tired or frustrated. Good luck- if anyone can pull this off it's you two!!!
