Filter in Muffler

not exactly..
my mechanic said that there was a filter (wire mesh) in one of the mufflers that usually gets chalked up due after about 100K and needs to be cleaned.
Hes sure its avaialbe in teh mercedes and suggested that it might be in the A8 as well

Perhaps he means ...
the Catalytic Converters .. they are full of fine passages which can become clogged. However, this would result in an engine code, and you have not mentioned having any trouble codes.
