When I removed the bulbs I used an LED flashlight and a small dental mirror to look around and I was able to quickly check them out, they looked pretty shiny all around.
You're absolutely right that it was not an accurate inspection! Thanks for the info and the pictures, I may do that in the future to get a really good look at them.
