Help on Transmission Problem-'97 A8
Hello All-
Anyone have problems getting the car into gear? I shift the lever but the car doesn't go into gear. Finally it went into gear and "chugged". The P-2 lights in the center display highlighted all the gears. Check engine light went on and now the car is being flatbedded to the "stealer". Any advice would be appreciated.

Your tranny is in "limp home" mode
It opens the torque converter and puts it into 4th gear. That will get you where you need to go (in your case, the stealer is not where you want to go....but you have little choice).
First thing they need to do is to pull the fault codes. If it has a fault code, then the Bently tells you what the problem is.
If it doesn't have any fault codes, this is caused by a seperate set of problems. The Bently also describes what could be the problem if there are no fault codes.
One of which is "ATF is dirty". Therefore, when they tell you that "you need a new transmission for $9,432.29", you tell them, please drop the pan, drain the fluid for a LONG time, change the filter and fill it up again and let's see what happens.
That's about $350 at the stealer and will probably get you on the road again. However, there is something that is wearing out in the tranny, but you could probably extend your tranny life significantly by doing this.
pw (I have to look up the no codes again and post it)

Re: Your tranny is in "limp home" mode
Paul- It sure didn't feel like it was going to "limp" anywhere. Sounded really BAD when it finally went into gear. I didn't drive it at all.
Just had the transmission fluid checked about 3 months ago and the shop said it looked like new.
I will take your advice and definitly spend the $350 changing the fluid - long before spending the $$$$$ to do the transmission. Any idea why it is fine one second and not the next? This just doesn't sound right. Appreciate your help. SAB
