It's ALIVE! I've created a 1997 Tiptronic Monster!
Yes, you've all been waiting for it....at least those of you that have a 1997. Why did we get that 97 without tiptronic? Because it has steering wheel radio controls!
Now it has Tiptronic! Yes, I was fixing my leaking gas fitting via the skiracer way tonight, and since I was so close to the TCU, I just had to go in there and dig around.
Good thing I went in there instead of the center console -- cause there's no wiring running from the TCU to the center console!
However, there is wiring running from the TCU to the 10 and 6 pin connectors in the electronics box (the three wires that control the tip), just no pin or wiring on the secondary side that would normally go to the Tiptronic gate at the shifter.
I stuck some test connectors in the back side of the connector to "energize" tip mode (to test if it would work on the 97), was running the car, put it in gear with the hand brake on, then went under the hood and jumped it into tip mode. Low and behold, the dashboard lights up 5-4-3-2-1 with the car being in 1.
For those who have a 97 and have never seen tip, the P-R-D-4-3-2 turns off and the instrument display lights up 5-4-3-2-1 (with the 1 to the right of where the 2 normally is).
So I just had to do it, I cut the three wires that I needed to cut (they weren't connected to anything anyways), got some doorbell wire (maybe it's phone wiring) and hooked it up!
It's kinda hard to see, but you can see that there are 3 wires connected to the three wires I cut, then put electrical tape on them and then a tie wrap.

Also hooked the fourth wire (black) to ground in the engine compartment.
Ran them inside the passenger compartment so they could be next to me (I get lonely sometimes!).

So now for the big test, I have to drive home from my parent's house where I'm doing this (good thing they are on vacation, how old am I?).
Put the car in gear, twist the red and black wire together and bingo! Tip mode, first gear. Drive away, remember, I have the 00011 tranny coding and yes! yes! yes! It holds first gear until redline or until I shift.
Do you think I shifted? No way, wanted to feel that power in first! Really don't need a six speed with the ability to hold gears.
Then I touched the yellow to the red/black connected wires, bingo! Shifts to 2nd.....touch the white wire to red/black, bingo! back to 1st (going about 25 MPH, that's cool!). Can run through the gears no problem up and down.
However, I need a little bit better switching arrangement, but the mad sciencetist does it again!
Anybody have any ideas how/what/where to make a switch arrangement? Besides buying the 98 and later gate, etc (don't even know if the shifter will move to the right without a mod), where else could we put it?
We'll need a maintaining switch (on/off) to switch it into tip and two momentary switches to upshift and downshift.
Cost so far - $0.00!
Oh, BTW, I will share the engineering with everyone for free.....however you'll need to fly me to some exotic place so we can discuss it! ;-)
Throw out some switch ideas!

BTW, here's the schematic of the 98 and later tip circuit. All I did was cut the wires at T10b/6, T10b/7 and T10/5 and connect the door bell wire to it. Ran the ground and essentially made up the tip switch as shown in this diagram.

Re: It's ALIVE! I've created a 1997 Tiptronic Monster!
I remember something the salesman told me when I picked up my '97 last May. While boasting that the car had a new transmission (replaced at Audi's expense) he said he wondered if the only difference between the tip and the non-tip was the shift gate, because they had the exact same part number.
Hmmm.....

use one of the center console switches to...
dis/engage the tip on/off and then re-wire two of the (imo useless) radio switches on the steering wheel as up/down shifters.
then, as per few posts below, wire one of the unused center console switches as a garage opener - yes, you need a garage, paul...
bravo paul !!!

Do you think I could use the High Voltage Transformer from the xenons to make a....
.....Jacob's ladder? Only use those transformers to turn on the headlights.....then we could switch it over to a Jacob's ladder.....
