Default Now we know - S8 can smoke M5;

I just posted this on the A6/S6 forum in response to some nut who has all of the 2.7/2.8/4.2 guys up in arms; I wish you could all have been there....

Just jumped over from the S8 forum and couldn't resist....

Wait until this idiot finds out that the first M5 just got smoked light-to-light the other night... S8 did the honors, thank you.

Now, you A6/S6 guys seem like a pretty vicious bunch, so before you get the entire tribe together to stone the village-idiot, let me just say that the culprit is that trigger happy rear-wheel drive bimmer (or is it bummer....?)

It takes true mastery to extract the max from all of that power and a manual tranny. (Lotto slipping and such - weird smells - megga bucks...) It was a little damp out and I was drinking some bubbly straight out of the bottle (one of the benefits to the tip-option in Audi) while celebrating the market...(Mr. 2.8 vs 4.2 vs BMW - take a hint: Next time the market goes DOWN, you must go SHORT - not long....!)

Any way, man was that guy pissed....! He was shifting and screeching and he wouldn't give it up either.

I think that it was "2.8 as fast as 4.2" 's brother....

Just wanted to let you all know that us 8'ters are doing our part to keep the four rings connected....

Cheers, JvR.

Well, M5 ETR, I don't know about this "2.8 as fast as 4.2" guy but he is not me. I'm the guy you posted on at the A6 forum. Anytime you'd like to run against my 93 urS4, I'd be happy to show you my tail lights (they're a beautiful shade of red).

Cheers:-)

Default Must have been a little more than damp out

I thought about it and it is possible for a S8 to beat a M5 but he must have spun the tires like a maniac. bad driving can account for several seconds in a drag. I have dropped many a car that should have beat me, in my pre-S8 mobile (svt contour). So if this story is true then I solute you. but please don't drink and drive.

Wow, I would love to see an UrS4 smoking a S8!

Ok, an heavily tuned and modified urS4 could probably do it in a stright line drag. It would have to have about the same amout of power as the S8 of course, as their weight is almost the same.

But on the track or in the corners, forget all about it. I had a S4 for alomst 5 years, engine tuning, topp class suspension, Porsche brakes, a lot of stuff. 305Hp, 450Nm torque. (my A8 has 400 Nm). The S4 couldn't beat my stock A8 4,2 sport on the track by far. The A8 is much more refined, much better balanced. The urS4 will wag it's tail from side to side when the A8 still looks like sunday-cruising. When the A8 starts to lose tracktion sideways, the urS4 will do a 360.

Don't forget, the S8 will do similar track times as a Porsce 911 Carrera 4 on tough tracks like the Nürburgring. It is a serious mistake not to take it seriously!

Best regards,
Kjell A.

Thanks for the vote of confidence;
Yeah, an S4/urS4 - modified or not - I'm sorry - not today...

The jury is still out on this subject as no one seems to have the full skinny on exactly what rear-ratios this thing has, but I gotta tell ya - 4000 rpm at 100mph for a V8 with 5 gears! ...it's strong at the lights... It plucks on the take-up!!!

I have a buddy's G-meter and I have been able to get sub-sixes... (it only measures 0-62!....I am out playing in the Seattle-area today if anyone wants to call me and come out to play 425 985-0869....

- Just damp - and yes - as I said, he was spinning it pretty badly. He took 3 shots at it though, so you would think that he would eventually get it right....

I only have 1400 miles on it, so I'm still trying to take it easy....

What folks seem to forget is that it takes a lot of driving experience as well as experience in a particular car to get that manual launch just right - Ask me (from many days in tail-happy Mustang GTs with superchargers...)

All I am doing on the S8 is to hit the brake, nail the gas (filling up the torque converter) and release the brake. Works great on this car with the all-wheel drive....

The other key here is rear ratios; In a Q45,(a V8/4.5l) pre-change-out of the rear ratios - I was turning 3100rpm IN A 4-SPEED V8 at 100mph... This was running the standard 3.54:1 ratio....

When I went to the shorter 4.11:1 (300ZX Ring and pinion gears) 100mph was turning 3700rpm on that same 4 SPEED box!!!

Now in this 4.2l/V8 with a 5 SPEED BOX I am turning almost 4000rpm at 100mph on the standard rear-ratios... What is the ratio on this thing???

We (I) now know that the Audi number of "shaving 3 tenths of a second off of the standard A8 0-60 number" is VERY conservative.... Even without driving it: There is no way that 3/10s of a sec. is the only improvement for the extra 15 to 22lb ft torque, the extra 50 - 60hp (depending on the model), that heck of a short ratio, the tip with the new programming etc etc....

I have driven 2 6Speed S8 s in Europe for a combined 5 hours and I can asure you this car is just as quick off of the line. It's all in the ratios for the US spec cars...

This morning (using a friend's G-Meter) I have been getting sub-sixes (and it's measuring 0-62!!!) The car is still tight....

I am not just in awe of my new toy - I had to be dragged kicking and screeming from my Q45 with Nitrous and 455 horses at the crank...

Happy driving.
