Default Overheating Issues

Hey guys, first post here, please be kind.

My 1999 A8 tends to overheat while stationary or in traffic. There is a noticeable temp in the air coming out of the A/C vents. As soon as I feel the air getting warmer I can look down and immediately see the temp gauge rise. Then when I am back on the gas cool air beings to flow and the temp gauge lowers again. (Sidenote I have the climate control set to HI when I'm getting into heavy traffic, but cool air continues to flow out the vents until I stop)

Apparently the dealership can't get the car to overheat, so they're no help. I've got a guy who'll help and works on an 2001 A8L. I've also searched older threads but don't know enough to diagnose the real issue. Any suggestions? Thanks!

sounds like the mech. fan clutch or the electric fan is not turning on.

Default Mechanical Clutch

On the pre facelift cars on warm days, they stopp turning or slow down a lot. Only on hot days though.

You can try pulling over when it starts overheating, and use a pencil to try and stop it.....it should chew it up, but it probably won't.

Good deal. Narrowed down the possibilities. Thank you both for your replies!

Default not sure for pre-facelift cars, but on post facelift cars

the viscous fan should be able to be stopped with a finger...

that is not to say that they don't go out - but if they do they should not be spinning, or obviously slow...

Default High pressure ac switch which is shorted at the connector, it needs a good clean

this is preventing the fan kicking in on a higher speed and the warm air is a result of the compressor shutting down. The switch is located at the front (remove bumper) under the head light.

No, at least not on a US market A8. The wiring diagram shows no such possibility.
