To remove or not remove the paper band on the oil filter?

To remove or not remove the paper band on the oil filter?
Does the paper around the oil filter stay on or do you remove it? Does it serve any useful purpose? Doing an oil change this weekend and adding the new Amsoil European Car Formula 5W-40.

We've had this discussion, and upon investigation.....
the oil flows from the outside of the filter to the inside, so the pressure drop across the filter will tend to help keep its shape. If the oil flowed from the inside out, then it would be different. Thus, the paper band on the filter is likely there to help it keep its shape during assembly, transportation, and storage, and is not necessary during normal operation. In fact, the band may partially block the filter element increasing the pressure drop across it and reducing its effectiveness. That being said, I've used the filter both ways with no noticable difference. Bottom line- I don't think it matters much.
