Default send out torque converter for rebuild or buy one?

97 A8 4.2 quattro. Finally got the trans out to attempt to fix bang + limp mode (reverse works fine); I expect to find a broken A drum. I had already had the cracked upper valve body welded, replaced the manual valve (which had been jamming after warming up; now good), and got a valve body with oversize pressure regulator in case the notorious ridge worked into the original pressure regulator bore is what caused my limp mode.

Since I have the trans out, I'm thinking I should do the torque converter now as well. (Tozo M8 recommends this in his audipages article about removing the trans.) Rock Auto sells a remanufactured Dacco converter for $140. I'd heard bad things about Dacco but also that they're much better now than they used to be. Erikkson will rebuild my converter for $250.

But wasn't there also a torque converter seal issue in some years, and if so, would having mine rebuilt be asking for trouble if it's basically flawed?

Any recommendations? Other choices for places to rebuild or buy? I'm not looking to make anything higher performance or to waste money on replacing parts that are still good.

I saw a new Dacco converter (#BM38) for $260 on ebay. This is about what it would cost for a rebuilt unit from Erikkson. Any comments on this option?

I would either go Rebuild from Erikkson or get one of these from Advanced automotion. Audi S4/A6/VW Passat 5HP19 Stock Stall Torque converter, Advanced Automotion

Thanks for that reference, but it's for a different trans (ZF 5HP19) than I have in my 97 A8. The A8 quattro has the ZF 5HP24A.

Yesterday I just went cheap and ordered the rebuilt Dacco from Rockauto. I think the supposedly new Dacco I saw is not really new, because I understand that Dacco is a remanufacturer.

I actually don't know if my existing converter is worn or not, but it seems to be a reman, since it's painted. I'm toying with the idea of just keeping it instead of getting the $50 (minus about $10 shipping) core charge back. Maybe cut it open to look at it, someday.
