Two error codes at the same time?
Couple of days ago, the check engine light (or Malfunction Indicator Light came on) and I got an appointment at the local Audi Dealership. Before going to the dealership, I went to the local Autozone and pulled the Error code (It was "P-0491 - Secondary Air Bank Error"). So I dropped the car of at the Dealership today morning I get call saying that my "Cam position sensor" was reporting an error saying it was out of perimeter or something. I was taken aback, because that was not the error code I pulled yesterday. Then I told the service advisor that I pulled the error code yesterday and it was the "secondary air bank error". Then the advisor changed his story and said there were two error codes.... One was for the cam position sensor and the second was for the air bank (He said some vacume hoses needed to be replaced). I have a bad feeling that I am being taken for a ride. Is it possible that two error codes got set on the computer at exactly the same time ?? Seems like an implausible occurance to me...

Yes it's possible. I don't know how the Autozone scan tool works, but does each code it retrieves need to be acknowledged before it will show you the next one? If so, could both codes have been there yesterday?
Anyway, there's a service bulletin about cracked vacuum hoses causing the secondary air fault. A redesigned hose set with molded rubber elbows where the old one broke is about $80 and is easy to change.

Looks like this is going to be a bad week. The vacume hose was an easy replacement.. But the dealer called me back and said that, after diagnosing the cam timing error code, it looks like the variable cam timing system has to be replaced which apparently involves some expensive parts and about 8 hours of labour.So about 1.5k down the drain. He also said that the repair was not completely necessary and could probably be clubbed with the timing belt/timing chain replacement.. oh well..

Secondary Air Pump Fault
P-0491 states to check the fuse for the secondary air pump. However, I would check the hose on the top of the left cylinder bank to make sure it's not pulled off.....they shrink over time.

I finally decided to get rid of the check-engine light I have been living with for about a year. So I take my car to Autosport Werks in Broomfield, CO. They take a look at the error code, diagonose the problem to a Cam-Position-Sensor failure, fix it and send me happily on my way. No check engine light again..
This really puzzles me, the original Audi Dealer in Dallas had insisted that the problem was with the variable cam timing system(??) and had refused to fix the problem without a full timing belt change. I had politely refused. And all this occured when I had taken my car into the shop for some other issue for which I had pulled the OBD-II code (secondary air bank leak or something). Hmm, if I was the suspicious kind I might think that the Audi dealer was trying to rip me off but I have to give them the benefit of doubt and assume it was some kind of incorrect and inept diagnosis. Oh well..
