Default What motor/pump is that ?

I finally got an old junk laptop working and in the garage. Hooking up the Vag cable I had the car key in the on position. There is a loud motor running and running. It would shut off for 5 seconds and start back up for 1 minute. This went on for the entire time I had the car key in the on position.
The noise comes from the firewall between the brake reservoir and the blower motor housing intake.
I hope this is not normal. I also hope nothing is broken. Any help would be great! Thanks!

It is a coolant after run pump. You can unplug it if you never use the rest function on the climate control.

Wow, add that on top of the long list of things I knew nothing about. Here I was thinking some hose or whatever had a leak. So it curculates the coolent around through the heatercore? Is this so you can turn the car off and still get heat? Do american cars have this? ha. silly question.
Or can I turn it off with the rest button? If it is on all the time the key is on. If anyone could clerify why this pump is important I would appresiate it.
Thanks again to tozoM8 you are very helpful.

Sorry if I am last to the party on this pump. I would have never guessed it had this thing.

Doesn't that also circulate a little coolant (engine to radiator...or visa versa) after shutting off engine...sort of a replacement for the old fan afterrun feature?
My "old" '90 Passat wagon fan starts up minutes after I'm in the house and starts my dog barkin

It is on when the ignition is on .If you press the rest button it will stay on for 10 minutes after you turn the ign off. If it bothers you just unplug it.

No no no no no....I get that. I've always used the restore setting and love that feature. I never get out of the car when I drive the wife to the store...winter time, I always use that, so I don't have to keep the car running.

Her car, a B5, doesn't have the restore feature, but DOES have an after-run electric coolant pump that turns on 15 secs after you shut the engine off (above a certain engine temp) and circulates coolant for 10-12 secs...just long enough to switch engine with radiator coolant. If it's even hotter, then the electric fan comes on, like the older models.

I thought the A8 electric pump might double for this function...thought I read that somewhere, but can't find it now.

GOT IT? ...or do we have to fight about this?!! ...I'm kidding...don't hit me...not the face!

That B5 is probably a turbo, that's why it runs the pump to cool the turbo.

Nope..2000 Passat GLX 2.8 30V. Not all of em had it...hot weather model or special order.
Bought it used in Atlanta. They said it was traded in by a Brazilian man out of South Florida, but it has all US stickers, but no original owner's manual.
I've heard of similar models out in the desert west:
