04 drivetrain clunk
OK guys, my 04 A8L has 120K. If I am coasting (at any speed) and I tip the throttle in ever so gently, I hear and feel a clunk. It is like there is some play in the drive train. I have had W126 Benzes and they all needed a new guibo at about 100K. Is there an equivalent part in the drive train of my car? What should it cost to replace?
Thanks! keep the shiny side up.

I detected a similar sound, though in mine it seems to be coming from the front left. It may be because I am just now adjusting to the quietness, it seems there are a host of new, tiny sounds. I know this isn't too helpful to you, but at least it'll bump your thread!

If you have a noise at a front corner, I would look at...
front upper control arm inner bushings, then each outer ball joint plus the outer and inner tie rods (hard to really figure out inners). If anything is torn, cracked or distorted, it's a likely culprit. The front upper control arms are a known seemingly universal issue and TSB documented. Not an if, just a when.

Have you gotten under the car...
(note that my first reply was really for aTOMic since I thought his issue might be different than yours)
Some ideas on yours from long term Audi ownership.
...
1. to check out the driveshaft? There won't be a rubber damper there per your other experiences, but there are the connections subject to wear. You might check that tail end of the tranny from what you are mentioning.
2. Also look at the drivetrain mounts, further back from what you are saying, and thus perhaps the ones supporting the tranny generally. If you find any covered with oil that's been there a while, it will tend to eat out the rubber.
3. And, even though you are mentioning the noise further back, look at the basic motor mounts and the torque support mount up by the passenger side front of the motor. If those are cracked and/or you find signs fluid (oil) has leaked out, figure the affected one is bad. That will set up the potential for play in the drivetrain, potentially leading to what you are experiencing. FWIW, recently found a broken torque support on my W12. No clunking, but a bit more motor shake and movement. Very expensive to fix on a W12, but covered under my recently expired CPO warranty.
