05 MMI screen---needs new MMI control unit
Here's an update on my 05 with MMI screen problem...a series of tests on Wed. points to the main MMI control unit as being the culprit. Audi is air-shipping a new unit from Germany as these units are encoded with the VIN of the vehicle. They can't be pulled from one car and placed in another (actually they could be switched but the screen would show a VIN that wouldn't match the car's actual VIN). Anyway, the unit is supposed to be here today or early next week. In the meantime, I'm picking up my car at noon so I can have it over the long weekend. IF the MMI unit shows up this afternoon at the dealership, I can run it over quickly since I live less than a mile away. With or without the MMI screen functioning, this is still a great car. I'd rather be driving it than the 04 A6 Avant loaner.....

MMI manufacturer (and Audi) are to blame...
As I'm sure everyone knows in this forum, Audi has another manufacturer produce the MMI system for them. This company is the one sending the new MMI central unit to my dealership per Audi's instruction. Audi doesn't have the MMI units as a stock item since they need special encoding that Audi can't handle internally. The bottom line is that this is new technology that the "early adopters" (read A8 buyers) are field testing for Audi. That may not have been the intention but that's what's happening.
The MMI manufacturer had better quickly find a fix for the MMI problems or this is going to tank Audi's quality and customer satisfaction ratings. A8's are only a small fraction of Audi's overall sales. Now the much higher volume '05 A6 has the same MMI system and I can just see them putting an MMI screen in every Audi vehicle as the models are redesigned. Audi should recognize how important it is to get their MMI supplier to fix these issues or get another supplier on board fast. Maybe they already know but won't ever tell us...the customer, they're working on it and a fix is coming soon. Maybe not...

Re: MMI manufacturer (and Audi) are to blame...
Thanks. . didn't know some of that.. . bottom line to me is, they have been putting this equipment in thousands of cars for more then a year and they still don't have it right!! For a car that costs that much; totally inexcusable. Such a superb driver and superior interior. . some just get tired of spending your days back and forth to dealerships (most of which are quite far from their customers).

Any new technology or product is ALWAYS tested on the public.
You cannot expect a manufacturer to "work out the bugs" using their test mules even if theyve been running for a year. They need hundreds of cars running under different conditions out in the public domain. Most of us have learned that first hand!!!!
