Default 2004 A8L - How to clear 02596 Rear Brake Pads Worn Fault?

Gentlemen,

How do I successfully reset the 02596 Rear Brake Pads Worn Fault from the dashboard? I followed below thread and VCDS video to the letter.
https://www.audiworld.com/forums/a8-...ience-2846250/

VCDS says for older A8 models I may have to do several adaptations and functions tests to clear the code, I have done it 10 times with no success. For the record, pads and rotors were purchased from local audi dealer, and charger was always connected.

Your expertise is greatly appreciated!

Forgot to mention, the implausible signal fault, cleared during first attempt, only the brake pads worn faults stayed and the 12 mm pad thickness is stored in Adaptation.

Did you close the controller and turn the ignition off, as it says just above the pictures about replacing pads? As in, as if you went to replace the pads even though you aren't now? Having BTDT, it is even easier to miss that step when you are just trying to reset it, and think that like everything else in VCDS you just press ahead with no need to close out the item/session. ...BTDT...

Default Your PCode Indicates Pad Thickness Not Adapted

Are you SURE you adapted and it took? What is the content of channel 6 now? Like this:

Connect a battery charger as per repair manual.

[53 - Parking Brake]
[Adaptation – 10]
Enter Channel 06
[Read]
Enter pad thickness in New Value
[TEST]
[Save]
Confirm Yes.
[Done, Go Back]

[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 010
[Go!]
The brake pads are now opening and closing 3 times.
Motor AMP load increases then drops to near zero.
Basic Settings: ON
Wait thirty seconds!
[Done, Go Back]
[Fault Codes - 02]
[Clear Codes - 05]
Confirm Yes.

[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

Yes I did close the controller and took the key out of ignition prior to replacing the pads. I was following VCDS video instruction to the letter. The 12 mm pad thickness in Adaptation also is there whenever I check. I took it for a short drive to bed in the pads and rotors this morning.

I also found this on VCDS website Audi A8 (4E) Parking Brake - Ross-Tech Wiki
  1. Repeating the Function Test Basic Settings operation and make sure the stored value in Adaptation channel 006 did not resort back to 03. If that alone does not resolve the issue proceed to 2:
  2. Test drive the vehicle and scan it to see if 02596 - Rear Brake Pads Worn switched to Intermittent, allowing you to clear it.
Not really sure what else to do other than redoing the whole procedure. Maybe I should change the pad to 11 mm (the measurements of pads was 11.5 mm)

Also, did this several times yesterday following it to the letter. VCDS video says that on older models A8 it may take several attemps of doing the adaptation to clear the fault.

Yes, try 11mm. I was actually suspicious of that when I read your thread. Having played with trying to set a higher number once myself (since light triggers early), it wouldn't take.

1. As you have done, set the 12mm or 11 whatever, then make sure that is stored in there.
2. Clear codes
2. Drive it. - will fix itself after a bit. At least mine did.

Flakiest POS module ever!

Thank you everyone for support. I tried few more times parking brake on and off then went to the adaptation channel 06 followed by function test 010 in basic settings 04 using different pad thicknesses. Started wth 10,11,12,13, and then finally the worn rear brakes fault disappeared from dash when I used 14 mm setting in adaptation. I was then able to clear fault in 53 parking brake module. Test drove and tested parking brake all seems good fault is gone. I then went back to adaptation 06 and changed pad thickness back to 12. As soon as I did that fault came back and I wasn’t able to reset which is back to initial symptom. I repeated all above with 14 mm pad thickness and function test and fault is gone and cleared again. Hopefully I can call it done. Thanks again
