From the brief look I had earlier - what they are offering are refurbs - NOT brand new items. They do seem to have a lifetime guarantee, though. Waiting for news.......

I contacted them yesterday to find out if they use a NEW shock with the rebuild. They use the Old shock and rebuild all of the air components.

I ended up having to buy a replacement as there were other, internal leaks after sealing the valve. Kept the old one though, so next time I can get it rebuilt.

Thanks to all for their help

A few tips for anyone contemplating this:-

The frontmost of the two top links goes in almost effortlessly with the steering turned fully towards the side in question.

The rearmost one does the same with the steering in a central position.

For the anti-roll bar, I found it easier to attach the bolt to it then put on the wheel, set the suspension to lift and let the damper do the work of aligning the parts. It means you have little space to work but that anti-roll bar is huge and very difficult to lever into position.

Default BTW, thanks!

Over time, this will be a valuable parts add for the D3 (A8/S8) community--and others w/ adaptive air.

On your post, I'm guessing when you said normal or front suspension, you meant normal or sport suspension? I didn't see rears. Hopefully go out even less, but is there a plan there?

Default 2004 A8 Shocks Normal or Sport

How do I determine if my A8 has "normal" or "sport" front shocks? I bought car used and I don't think I have original sales papers.

Will VIN number help?

The car has the electronic controller set up that lets you set suspension to dynamic, standard, lift, etc.

Do you mind sharing where you bough the strut from? I am in Qatar these days with a similar problem on a 2006 W12. The dealer's price for the strut is an arm and leg and I am inquiring about other options.

I know that everyone says that the actual damper assemblies in these things "last forever," but sooner or later, the damper itself has GOT to need freshening. I would think that when rebuilding the whole assembly, that this would be part of the equation, but it seems not to be.

Replacing all the air guts is fine and dandy, but to retain (or possibly, even improve) the ride and handling of these cars, do you not have to worry about the damper guts at some point?

Yes, but that cost $1500 a piece and they should be changed at least in pairs.
