Dead 2004 A8
Is there any way to roll a 2004 A8. I had it towed to my house but they dropped it on the street and I need to get into my garage. If I could place it into neutral it would be easy enough to do. Is there a shift locking mechanism that has a release. Most cars have them accessible through the ash tray or a cover plate in the console. I called the tow company and they drug it off of the flat bed???

Pull out the ashtray insert, remove the torx screw holding the ashtray cavity. There is a cable near the center. Push on it with a thin, flat blade screwdriver and move the shift lever.
You MAY be able to get at this cable without having to remove the torx screw. Look through the small slit at the top of the ashtray with the insert removed.

Got it thanks! The car did lunge forward slightly as I pulled it from park. But when I placed into neutral it still will not roll. It had been sitting for a long time prior to being towed. If it is suppose to be able to roll by placing it in neutral then the brakes might be stuck it sat outside since December. Can you confirm that it should be able to roll with the lever pushed and placed into neutral.
Thanks for the prompt reply.

Yes, it should roll provided that the parking brakes were not applied. On this vehicle, the parking brakes are part of the rear calipers. These have electric stepper motors. Once applied, they keep the rear wheels from rotating. They can only be released by having proper power applied to the vehicle electrical system and ignition on. Then press the brake pedal and then press the parking brake button down.
You can apply the parking brake without ignition on but you can't release it unless you have the ignition on.
You may have to head over to Harbor Freight or an auto parts place and buy a couple car dollies. Maybe a pair of heavy duty furniture dollies will work, but they better be really heavy duty as that is a heavy vehicle.

Thanks Mister Bally the ignition key on and push the parking brake button down maybe what I was missing. It is pouring down here at the moment but as soon as it lets up I will give it a try.
