my father is having a problem with the center console armrest on his A8L...
wanted me to ask you guys.. as i understand it the armrest is supposed to be on a sort of rachet system for raising an lowering and his seems to be broken, there is no resistance or ratcheting anymore, when you lift the armrest it just falls back down... any easy fix for this?

That should do it. Lift all the way "up"(back) and the "teeth" should re-engage, as one
brings the arms all the way back down and then up to the position/location one wants it to stablilize. Caveat-unless it's busted and needs replaced 'cause you had un-controlled love making in the front seat, etc.

There are 2 possibilities. First the option as already described. ...
Second is that the mechanism has failed. My 05 had this happen. The armrest rachet mechanism on some models has failed and you cannot get it to re-engage by lifting it all the way back.
I had the drivers side replaced only to have the passenger side fail later. It took 3 attempts to get the things back in alignment. So if this is the problem - it is if lifting it all the way up does not re-engage the thing - have them replace both sides not just one.
