Unhappy 2012 Audi A8 Steering Problem

Hi guys. About a week ago I noticed steering getting extremely heavy on low speeds all of a sudden. I checked the steering fluid and it was empty; however, I have not noticed any leaks. I filled the steering fluid back up, and it has not gone low since, but the steering is still very heavy.
The car is 2012 Audi A8 4.2L.
What do you guys think might be happening? Has the power steering pump gone bust?

Did you change your drive mode? One of the options stiffens up steering at low speeds

If steering pump don't make much noise I would assume it is steering rack (I think that's the name of it) I know Q7 TDI had issues with steering racks and that's where the fluid could escape as well.

I did not change the drive mode. When I first felt it I thought someone had switched it to dynamic mode, because the sensation is quite similar, but it’s in comfort mode. And it only happens while stationary or at very low speeds. As soon as you press the gas it loosens up.

Thanks for your reply.

I don’t think steering pump makes any noise. Would you know how I could check if it’s the steering rack?

The best way would be visual inspection. Lift car up take belly pan covers and look for fluid leak. I know Q7 had very small leaks but fluid was escaping. You might need new steering rack.

@Sabadara to make you feel better I just noticed steering fluid leak on my 2013. And it is on the steering rack. I will investigate it in more detail next week.
